Pre-school - Eric Carle 2

Welcome to Eric Carle Pre school.

Our pre school manager is Mrs Shirlow and our early years practitioners are Mrs Gool, Mrs Cobley and Mrs Williams.

We foster a strong child-initiated, play-based focus within our pre-school, which offers a carefully planned curriculum that provides resources to enhance the holistic learning and development of children.

We follow the framework set out in the Early Years foundation Stage which sets the standards to ensure that children from birth to age five learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe.

We believe very strongly that children should be given equal opportunity to learn and develop both indoors and outdoors. All children are free to use our indoor and outdoor learning areas, they particularly enjoy spending time in our large woodland area.

We begin teaching Read, Write, Inc in pre-school when children are ready, usually beginning this in the Spring term.

Who is Eric Carle?

Eric Carle is well know for his colourful illustrations in over seventy picture books. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is recognised by millions of children all over the world. Since 1969, when The very hungry caterpillar was first published, it has been translated into 66 languages and sold over 50 million copies.

“With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held" Eric Carle. "I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun.”

About our learning

There are seven areas of learning which shape our education programme. The three initial areas, which provide a platform for all other learning, are known as the “prime areas.” These are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical development

The three prime areas are strengthened and applied within four “specific areas”. These are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

We aim for all our nursery children to have the right foundation for good future progress through school and a seamless transition into the reception year.

Each week, our children have the opportunity to spend 45 minutes in our hall enjoying some PE activities. These lessons help the children to improve balance, co-ordination and agility through the use of an Early Years scheme called Healthy Movers. Healthy Movers helps children build competency in physical literacy skills, but also improve social skills such as communication, listening and being part of a team.

We offer flexible provision during term time for children from 3 to 4 years of age. Children are entitled to 15 hours funded education the term after they are three and we also offer the extended 30 hour entitlement. If required additional sessions can be booked at a rate of £12.00 per session.  We offer a lunchtime provision from 11:45-12:15 at a cost of £2.00. Children are required to bring a packed lunch.
